Going Bananas

Banana PlantDid you know that banana’s are the 2nd most popular fruit around the world? We eat more bananas than oranges and apples combined!

The banana plant is not a tree.  It is actually the world’s largest herb and grows up to 25 feet high and 9 feet across.  Bananas are closely related to ginger and ornamental plants such as birds of paradise.

So why choose bananas?

Bananas are considered a “superfood” meaning they contain a high amount of nutrients and few negative properties.

A medium size banana contains 105 calories, 0 grams fat, 3 grams of fiber, 1 gram of protein, 17 % of your daily vitamin C and 422 mg of potassium.

Potassium is an important nutrient needed in your body.  According to the National Library of Medicine, your body needs potassium to build proteins, break down and use carbohydrates, build muscle and control the electrical activity of the heart.

So if bananas, apples and oranges are not the most popular fruit in the world, what is?

Well, the French call it “the apple of love” and the Germans “the apple of paradise”…. The tomato!
