How Our Summer Vacation Filled Our Hearts And Heads

Family Photo Coast to CoastHello October!

What a great spring and summer we had… lots of travel, work, AND travel for work. We had beautiful family holidays on both coasts, west for an Alaskan cruise and east to Maine for an incredible learning experience.

Breast Cancer and Me

This time of the year is one of reflection for me. Eight years ago, my diagnosis with breast cancer changed the trajectory of my life. Rattled to the bone, I began to explore and question everything I knew about “health.” Around this time, a loved one said to me, “…maybe now is a good time to assess your life and see if you are on the right path. Maybe now is a good time to make a career change if that is what is good for you?” The thought had never entered my mind. So I started to wonder if she knew something I didn’t. Wasn’t I good at what I did? All those years in school – that had to count for something, right?

The answer came to me pretty quickly. I LOVE what I do. My profession has allowed me time and space to have a family, make incredible relationships/friendships, and provide a level of care that I know is needed. It also keeps me active. I knew then, and still know now, this is where I am supposed to be.

What has followed since has been a fantastic journey of finding my niche. I love teaching people about the way a body is supposed to move. Movement is the key to longevity. I love to be that little voice in people’s head that reminds them, “don’t sit with your legs crossed”, “use that time brushing your teeth to practice your balance on one leg”, and yes – even, “this doesn’t seem normal, maybe its time to find out what’s going on with my back/neck/shoulder/knee”.

Safe Movements for Exercise

This summer, Jim and I invested some time into expanding our areas of interest. He attended a course with Dr. Jacob Harden, Prehab 101, which focused on safe movements for exercise. Jim is passionate about teaching people not to be afraid of discomfort when they move, and this course has strengthened his professional abilities for sure!

Scar Integration

Myself, I took a bit of a different path and attended a course called Scar Integration in Maine. Jim and the girls joined me for a week of adventure. They spent days exploring the area while I was in class, and our evenings filled with family time. The course taught me to assess scars (traumatic or surgical) in a new way, find areas where there may be restrictions that are causing pain or tightness, and encourage the tissue to move in a direction more like the healthy areas around it.

This scar work adds to my abilities to help anyone with post-surgical issues, from hip and knee replacements to post-lumpectomy and post-mastectomy incisions.

Breast Cancer is Part of My Past

My experience has only made me more determined to help those who have been through a similar process. Information after surgery is not easy to find when we are dealing with issues, big or small. I hope that I can provide an ear to talk to, hands to help heal, and we can move through this time together.

If you or someone you know is looking to find more information about how to exercise safely and get stronger or someone who is looking for care due to post-surgical issues/scarring, please do not hesitate to contact Jim or me.
